The new Mercedes EQS is here, and would you take a look at it! It is the most aerodynamic car in the world, with a drag coefficient of just 0.20 which is insane. This car may not look the prettiest, but it has been designed like that for more than a hundred reasons. The EQS does a range of 444 miles so far, and its aim (like many) is to become the “Tesla killer.” Mercedes has a huge advantage over Tesla in terms of aerodynamics, but what about everything else? How does this compare to the Tesla Model S?
The truth is, I don’t think you can really compare the two as such. One car is more focused on being luxurious and smooth, whilst the other is more focused on performance and driver dynamics. That’s not to say the EQS is slow at all, etc but it’s just a different car to the Tesla as a whole. I think the real rival for the EQS is actually the new Lucid Air.
The Lucid Air is another potential rival to the Model S. However, it has been made to go head-to-head with the Mercedes S-class therefore, it is very luxurious. Mercedes has realized that the Air could be a huge threat to the S-Class, therefore they’ve come in early and pitted up a rival against the Lucid Air. The last time they missed out on an opportunity like this, was with the Tesla Model 3. If Mercedes had only taken that car more seriously, then they would have not been beaten to their knees by the Tesla Model 3. That car completely sabotaged C-class sales.
The new EQS starts at over $100,000 for the RWD model. You will have to spend a lot more for an AWD model with a higher range and better performance. This is the flagship EV for Mercedes, and it really is worlds apart from any previous Mercedes model. A new lucid Air will start at just over $77,000, with 408 miles of range and 480hp. Cheaper than a base EQS, with better range, and more power. Both cars have incentives too.
But the EQS is a Mercedes. The pinnacle brand of luxury. There won’t be obvious build quality issues in the EQS or any signs of inexperience. The EQS has been made by people who make cars for presidents and other world leaders. The exterior is irrelevant really, all the good bits lay inside.

The Interior Is Beyond Insane

I have never seen an interior like this before. The EQS sets new levels on what a luxury interior should be like. Inside, it’s full of large screens. One for the driver, one in the centre console and one for the passenger. The screens all just merge into the centre dash quite easily, and when they’re off it looks as if they’re not there. The air vents are the next thing you notice, as they look so futuristic. The turbine-like design on the vents is so fancy, and I seriously have seen nothing like it on any other cars. The whole centre dash looks like it’s “hovering” as such since it’s just one huge massive piece that overhangs just about on the ends. It’s a really sexy design, and it’s a completely irregular shape. Most cars have gaps between the centre console screen and everything else. On the EQS there are no gaps really.
Furthermore, most new cars even the new S-class have a very sharp, boxy interior. The new S-Class has a rectangular drivers display and centre screen. This is the same with other cars such as the Tesla Model S, The Porsche Taycan and the Audi A8. The EQS is so much more unique compared to most cars.
You then have the other parts to the interior such as the trim, the seats, the lighting, the steering wheel and the large windshield. The seats are so luxurious and they look like a billion bucks. They are definitely the best seats I have ever seen in an electric car ever.
Next, comes the interior trim. It looks so fancy and so clean, definitely something you would expect on a luxury car. There will be multiple trim options available, and they all look classy. The interior lighting compliments the inside quite nicely, and it’s literally everywhere. Under the seats, in the centre console, in storage areas, etc. It’s like it’s a disco on wheels in all honesty. There are so many colours to choose from as well for the lighting. you’ll definitely never get bored of this feature.
They’re Pretty Powerful

The first EQS models in the US will have 516hp and 611 lb-ft of torque. Expect a mid to sub 4 second 0-60 time. The RWD model would probably do a 0-60 time of over 5 seconds. The 516hp EQS will be AWD and have a 478-mile range which is pretty decent. Expect the performance to be similar to the new Mercedes S500.
The motor isn’t just the only one that is powerful. The onboard computer packs 24GB of ram and eight CPU cores. The screen is OLED, and they’re is microphones everywhere for each passenger. As standard, you get the driver and centre screen. But for a bit extra, you can get the MBUX “hyper screen” which is the large screen across the dash. That includes a 17.7-inch screen for the driver and two 12.3 inch displays for the centre and the passenger. The MBUX system is often called the best in-car entertainment system out there.
This car’s rear wheels can also turn by 10 degrees which helps out with handling massively. It makes it so much of an easier car to handle and drive. It’s probably going to be really good in the corners, despite the car being set up for luxury. It will have adaptive air suspension which is another bonus both for comfort and better handling.
Would We Buy One?

I do like the EQS, but would I buy one if I had the money? I do like a Taycan, and I could get a nice one second-hand for a similar price to a new EQS. It’s faster, better looking and cooler. However, the EQS for me is far more luxurious, in fact, it’s one of the most luxurious cars I have ever seen.
If I wanted a luxury car, I would go for an EQS. I think it makes sense to have an electric luxury car due to how smooth it can be. The technology is insane, and it really feels like the car of the future. I think the looks aren’t the best and some Mercedes enthusiasts may despise it, but I knew it was coming. Recent Mercedes concept cars had this curvy aerodynamic design, and they looked really futuristic.
