Here’s Why You Need a McLaren 720s Right Now.

McLaren 720S - Wikipedia
The McLaren 720S was launched a few years back, and it instantly became a hit. The UFO-like design, the powerful 720hp V8, and the blistering acceleration made this car the ultimate supercar to have. New, this car costs $302,000 which is insane. However, these cars depreciate massively, so you can get one on the second-hand market for a lot less. The cheapest 720S I have seen in the US is around $229,000 which is nuts.
Options on the 720S are not cheap either. many owners tend to spec their cars with at least tens of thousands of dollars worth of options on their car. In fact, on the used market you will find quite a few 720S models that have over $100,000 worth of options added to them.
The reason why the 720S has depreciated so much is due to things like reliability and maintenance costs. They are not a cheap car to live with at all, and they’re also not too reliable at all. A new warranty is also ludicrously expensive. So many horror stories (most particularly with Launch Editions cars) have been told which has put off many potential buyers. Plus McLaren is known to produce a lot more than needed cars for showroom sales. Some of these cars would end up sitting in these showrooms for months and months. They essentially flood the market with cars that don’t sell for ages which affect prices altogether.
Of course, you probably will end up losing a lot of money on a used 720S, but not as much as you would if you purchased this car new. But anyway, this article isn’t about how or why the 720S depreciates so much. it’s about why you should buy one.

The Performance Is Beyond Blistering

McLaren claims that the 720S hits 60 in just 2.8 seconds which is bloody fast indeed. However, there have been many owners who have gotten a far quicker 0-60 time of under 2.5 seconds. Being an RWD car, the 0-60 does differ depending on conditions such as tires, weather, etc. Expect a quarter-mile time of just under 10 seconds and a top speed of around 208 mph.
The 720S may only have 710hp, but it can certainly embarrass cars with over 1000hp. There are also quite a few modifications out there for this car, though be aware since they will void the warranty and these cars are not cheap to fix. In fact, I believe the 720S is one of few cars where no engine mods are really needed.
On the track too, this car is nuts. It has a track mode whereby the digital drivers display folds so you can have a better view out. The 720S utilizes The Proactive Chassis Control II, which in a nutshell uses computers and things to optimize the car’s suspension depending on the condition. The system was also in the previous 650S model, but in the 720S it is 16kg lighter.
The 720S also utilizes a carbon-fiber tub monocoque which Mclaren calls the “MonoCage II.” McLaren sure is a brand to overcomplicate things. The MonoCage II is essentially the body of the car and it allows for the dihedral doors to be fitted. The monocoque on the 720S is actually 18kg lighter than the one fitted to the P1 hypercar.

The Interior Is Beautiful

The interior of the 720S is very special indeed. Everything is very organized, and it all feels high quality. The dihedral doors make the interior feel like a proper cockpit and since the 720S has a glass roof, the interior feels a lot roomier than it actually is. I love the seats too, they’re very comfortable. The portrait infotainment screen is like a smartphone, and it’s so easy to use.

It’s a very driver-focused interior, and unlike some cars, everything inside the 720S is easily accessible to the driver. From the starter button to the a/c, etc. A very friendly easy to use car. Opt for the luxury spec, and you’re met with tons of luscious leather that enhance the mood of this car. However, for that proper racecar feel, you do need to opt for the “performance” spec where you are met with a sea of Alcantara.

Plenty of used 720S models on the market come with incredible interiors. You should try to get one with the awesome Bowers and Wilkins system. There is absolutely no point buying a 720S if the interior spec is low because that will only make it a harder car to sell. My only complaint is, the paddle shifters could be bigger.

To conclude though, the interior of the 720S is far better than the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan or Ferrari 488.

It Looks Crazy

The 720S McLaren looks incredible. In fact, it’s one of the best-looking supercars ever. I love the curves of the car since they make it look sort of timeless. The science and intelligence too are also breathtaking. The way they have designed the air intakes is that they’re hidden behind the doors in a very sleek way. Usually, air intakes stand out on a supercar massively. Just look at the previous 650S model.

The front of the car for me is my least favorite part of the car. It is very aerodynamic indeed, but the headlights just remind me of a spider’s eyes. Surely they could have looked a tad more streamlined?

The rear of the car looks amazing. The diffuser is very complex indeed, but it sure is absolutely beautiful. The side profile for me is the best bit. I love the lines, the alloys look amazing and the small details such as the 720S badges make this car extra special. The car is also quite long too, and the engine is placed quite low down which means that you can’t really see it. Bit of a shame really.

To Conclude

The 720S is an impeccable car. It looks incredible, sounds incredible and it goes like stink. On the used market, these cars are such good value for money. Parts, maintenance, or warranty is not cheap unfortunately but hey you can’t have it all. It’s. slowly becoming more and more popular in the tuning scene too.

There are issues with this car besides reliability. For example, you cannot access the engine unless you have the tools. The front is a bit weird and I do think aftersales support could be better. But all in all, a great car and for the price on the used market it is a bargain.
