We’ve spoken about the AMG GT 4-door in the past, most specifically the GT63 models. The GT 4-door range is very exciting, and the GT63 for sure is a fantastic car. However, I will confess I hardly see any of these cars about at all. I know they’re expensive and all, but I cannot remember the last time I saw one of these cars on the road.
I live in the UK, and the only GT 4-door models we get are the 63 and 63S. The two most expensive models, and soon we will also get the E-Performance 63 model. These cars were meant to rival the Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models, which are again two other cars I hardly see.
It may be different in the US since the cheaper 43 and 53 V6 models are available. However, Mercedes has said that they will pull the plug on this car by 2023 as it is impacting profits due to the fact it’s in the same price range as the CLS and S-Class. This tells me then, that this car is a bit troublesome for Mercedes, and I personally feel they should never have produced it in the first place.
I’m unsure of how many GT 4-doors were sold in the US, but in the UK according to the somewhat unreliable site “How Many Cars Left” there are only 200 of these super sedans still on the road in the UK. That’s a very small number, though it could be way higher or a lot lower since this website is very inaccurate.
They sell these cars too in China. Though, I’m again unsure of how popular they really are over there. I assume since it is a luxury car that is plagued by high taxes, very few people have one of these cars.
So what is the problem with these cars? Why are these things not shifting at all? Why are cars like the Porsche Panamera better sellers? Well, let’s find out.
A Strange But Cool Car
Mercedes launched the AMG GT 4-door as a concept a few years back, and many were impressed. It was an 805hp super-sedan that had many styling cues from the 2-door AMG GT. This was in 2017, and a year later the production car was launched. It looked pretty much the same as the concept. Under the hood, it had 630hop which may not be 805hp, but it was more than enough.
I like the look of this car. It’s very sleek and aerodynamic, and it definitely turns heads. In my opinion, it is the best looking four-door car on sale at the moment. However, what sort of stunned me was that Mercedes had also launched the CLS and most particularly the CLS53 AMG.
Now, that’s a car that shares the same engine as the GT53 AMG and GT43 AMG. Yet, it’s cheaper and has near enough the same interior. It may not have the 9G AMG Sportronic transmission, but it is still is a pretty quick car.
Some may argue to me that the GT-4 is a car built by AMG themselves, rather than Mercedes hence why it’s more expensive and desirable than say a normal S-Class. Well, that may be true about the 63 models but the 53 and 43 models use Mercedes engines that have been tuned by AMG. So, there is a little white lie in that statement indeed.
A GT43 AMG starts at just under $90,000 which is a heck of a lot of money. Just to add to that, a CLS53 is around $9,000 less and that’s a quicker more economical car with the same engine. That too is an AMG just like the GT43. Plus on the used market, you can get a V8 E63 model which has more power for a similar price. That car has a proper AMG engine and the same amount of interior space.
The GT-4 door shares a lot with the CLS and E-Class. A lot more than what it shares with the 2-door AMG GT. These things include the chassis, the engine, and the interior. Whilst this is not a bad thing, it does make me wonder whether or not an E-class or CLS AMG provides better value for money. Maybe so.
I’d Rather Have an E63.
The E63 AMG is essentially the same car as the AMG GT 4-door. Same engine, same power and really same performance. It is though, far cheaper. I know some may argue that the GT is a far better handling car on the track, but ultimately I couldn’t careless. I’m not a track driver, and even if I was the E63 would still fare pretty well.
An E63 AMG S with 630hp starts at $107,300 which is a lot of money, make no mistake. A GT63 AMG S on the other hand starts at $140,000, which is the same or more than a high spec E63 AMG S with all the bells and whistles on it. The GT63 then looks like horrendous value.
There’s more too. The E63 is slightly more practical in the back due to the fact it hasn’t got a sloping roofline which means it is more friendly for families. The trunk I believe is also the same size. The GT63 can be opted as a 4 or 5 seat car. The E63 on the other hand is strictly 5-seater, and the middle seat is actually a seat. In the GT63, sitting in the middle will give you severe neck pains for life. I’m kidding, but the middle seat in the GT is only for occasional use.
I’d also choose a E53 over the GT53 model. Again, for near enough the same reasons.
To Conclude.
The GT 4-door is a great car on the track. It’s very fast, very sleek and very rare. However, for the money I would much rather another car since I feel there are better choices out there. If I wanted an AMG 4-door I would get the E63 which has the same power as the GT.
I can see why some may want the GT. It is unique, and it is a true AMG only car. However, for me I would rather save the cash. Depriciation though, isn’t too bad on these cars. Here in the UK at least, GT63 models are still holding their value somewhat pretty well.
