The Lamborghini Aventador is one of the best cars ever made. Unfortunately, this year the production of this car will come to an end. Almost eleven years since production first started, and the car hasn’t aged at all. It still looks massively ahead of its time. Yes, the technology was severely dated even in 2011, but none of that matters when you realize when you look at this thing. It truly is one of a kind.
The design was inspired by a stealth fighter jet. Those sharp lines, the pointy nose, the fat rear end, and the low roofline just make the car unbelievably sexy. It truly does stand out and in my opinion, it is the most outlandish supercar ever made. Nothing comes close to this when it comes to out-of-this-world design. The Aventador isn’t a beautiful car. In some ways, it is quite vulgar. But that’s not the whole point of it. The Aventador was made for fun and it doesn’t take itself so seriously.
Under the hood of the Aventador is a huge 6.5 liter naturally aspirated V12 with 690hp as standard. Later models had a lot more power. The 0-60 time is 2.9 seconds and flat out this car can do 217 mph. That’s faster than a Ferrari 458, a McLaren 12C, and any Porsche 911 model at the time. In fact, not many supercars even today can do 217 mph. So this then is a huge achievement for Lamborghini.
When the Aventador was launched in 2011, many people wondered why on earth Lamborghini bothered with a V12. After all, despite the fact it produced more horsepower and allowed the car to do a higher top speed, the acceleration times were pretty much the same as its smaller-engined rivals. Furthermore, around the track, the Aventador was a handful.
So is it a car you should buy? Let’s find out.
It’s One of a Kind.
There are no other cars out there like the Aventador. Its design, the engine, interior, gearbox, etc are all one of a kind. Lamborghini purposely did not follow the trend in 2011 when making this car. Whilst Ferrari and McLaren were focusing elsewhere on smaller engines, science, etc Lamborghini was focused on making something wild.
In 2011, the Aventador felt old. Very old. The gearbox was a single-clutch gearbox which was very old-fashioned, and it’s something that you would expect in a supercar from say 2001, not 2011. The 2021 Aventador Ultimae is quite possibly the only car that still uses a single-clutch automatic gearbox.
It is a semi-automatic otherwise known as an automated manual. Hence why it is so jerky and aggressive. It’s a very fast gearbox, especially at full speed. The automatic mode on the Aventador is awful as it is so slow and unprecise. End of the day though, it feels raw and it makes the car feel alive.
The V12 sounds incredible. By far one of the best-sounding cars in history. It sounds like an angry lion almost and the exhaust split flames. Huge flames. It is wild and it will open out the inner 9 year old in yourself. Inside, the car is like a spaceship. There’s the fighter jet-style starter button, the huge dashboard, the angular buttons, etc. It is crazy.
Handling-wise, the Aventador will shock you. It handles rather well, despite the size of the car. The SVJ model actually was the quickest car around the Nurburgring for quite a while. The standard LP700 was a wild car and its AWD system was a Godsend as it made the car actually driveable. In 2017, the Aventador received rear-wheel steering in the S model and that changed the feel of the car completely.
Does It Beat Its Rivals?
The Aventador was by far one of the most expensive cars to come out back in 2011. It is probably the most expensive car out of all of its rivals. Even today, these cars are still near the $200,000 mark. Cars like the Ferrari 458, the McLaren 12C, etc cost a whole lot less. But is that for a reason?
Some Aventador models such as the SVJ Roadster models are going for a price of almost $1 million which is absolutely nuts. That’s hypercar money, though the price is due to the inflated market. For $1 million that is a bit too much, though usually, these cars come with an insane specification with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of optional extras. A standard LP-700 coupe model is far less, with early models going for just under $200,000.
However, many believe that since the Aventador is the last proper naturally aspirated V12 Lamborghini (the replacement for the Aventador will be a plug-in hybrid) it will go up massively in price. Plus demand for this car is at an all-time high. Everybody wants an Aventador since. it is the ultimate supercar.
Modern rivals in 2021, include the 720S McLaren and the Ferrari SF90. Both cars are very expensive indeed, though the SF90 does hold its value a lot better than the 720S. Both cars look amazing and are powered by V8 Turbo units. However, both are nowhere near as dramatic as an Aventador.
To Conclude:
The Aventador is a very very fast car. It ticks all of the supercar boxes, and it is a proper poster-wall car. It isn’t the best car to drive by any standards and to most, it is a very scary car. Its dimensions are huge, the car is very powerful and visibility all around is terrible.
It is though overall a car that will surprise you. It isn’t too uncomfortable on the road, the handling is pretty good, and it is ridiculously fast. The gearbox will thump your back though when at the full chap and when it isn’t it will frustrate you to the max as it is stupidly dim-witted. The interior is amazing, with high-quality materials all-around. YOu do get Apple Carplay in newer models, but no touchscreen. It’s a festoon of buttons which actually is a good thing because that makes everything easier to use. the entertainment system and sat-nav itself are stupidly dated and the sound system isn’t that great.
Overall though, if you have the money then the Aventador is the car for you. It isn’t cheap to buy or run but it is a once in a lifetime experience.
