Is The New Ferrari Purosaungue Really Worth $400,000?

New 725hp, 193mph Ferrari Purosangue revealed: price, specs and release date | carwow

The new Ferrari Purosangue is the most talked about car in a long time. It’s a car that Ferrari really doesn’t want to make yet to follow customer demands they have done so, but in a very different way to its competitors. The Purosangue may look like an SUV and even be classed as an SUV Crossover by insurance companies, but Ferrari insists that the Purosaungue is not an SUV. In fact, the term SUV is seen as an offensive term by Ferrari.

Ferrari has shocked the world somewhat with this car. Partly because it has Rolls-Royce-inspired suicide doors and partly because it is so much more expensive than all the other cars offered by its competitors. For example, a new Lamborghini Urus starts at $221,506 which is a lot of money. Add in your preferred options and that price is knocking on the door at $300,000. Aston Martin price their DBX 707 at just $239,000 which is very expensive and again you would probably need to spend a lot more to get one with the options you want.

However, both cars look like an absolute bargain when you compare them to the Purosangue which isn’t priced anywhere near those cars. In fact, the Purosaungue costs more than the likes of the Ferrari F8 and 296 GTB supercars. If you wanted to buy a new Purosaungue expect to pay an eye-watering $400,000 base. That’s before all the costly options start.

If you want a Purosaungue with all the desired options like upgraded paint, carbon fiber parts, larger alloys, (etc.) expect to pay around half a million dollars. That’s almost as much as an SF90 supercar.

So is this high-rising car with all the trademarks of a crossover SUV, which you actually can’t call an SUV because the manufacturer will come out and hunt you down, any good? Is it really worth that much more compared to its rivals? Let’s find out.

It’s Got a Powerhouse Under The Hood

via: drive.com.au

Unlike the Urus and DBX 707, which both use very conventional German Biturbo V8s, the Purosaungue is very different. Under the hood is a Ferrari special. It’s a 6.5 liter V12 that produces 725hp which is absolutely insane. It will hit 60 in just 3.1 seconds and top out at 194 mph. Seriously impressive figures for this high-riding family Ferrari.

Ferrari states that a more eco-friendly V8 hyrbid model will be launched very soon. However, reports suggest that in 2024 and 2026 electric models may be launched which is a huge leap for the brand who are so obsessed with engines. The V8 will be the same 3.9 liter unit from the Roma, on which the Purosangue is based on.

It is a bit of a nice surprise to see the Purosangue have a V12 under the hood. In a world where everything is becoming smaller to satisfy clueless government officials, it is nice to see Ferrari flexing its legs and creating something magical. Although the V12 will be very thirsty it will make the car so much more dramatic.

The issue though, is that cars like the Urus and DBX 707 utilize very dramatic engines too. The V8 used in both cars crackle and pop like crazy and both offer better gas mileage and similar amounts of power. Furthermore, for a lot less the Bentayga Speed comes with 12 cylinders and a lot of power. Maybe not as much as the Purosangue but still enough to keep you satisfied.

Looks Are Subjective

You either love the Purosangue or hate it. The exterior of the car has its positives and negatives for sure but overall it will take some time to grow on people. The front of the car is hideous with its double-chin design and small headlights, it just looks so messy. The Urus is a much better-looking car from the front and the same can be said about the Bentayga.

From the side, you will see a cutout vent on the wing. This actually follows on from the cut-outs on the front bumper and this helps increase aerodynamics by creating a smoother airflow around the car. It looks quite nice and in some ways subtle but noticeable since it isn’t ludicrously big. You also get wider arches on the car which can be finished in carbon fiber. In my personal opinion, I much prefer body-colored arches but Ferrari has done this to make the car look a little more rugged.

There is only one door handle on either side of the car for the driver and front passenger. It’s the same door handle used on the Roma and it does look a little out of place since it does in some ways alter the clean lines of the car. The rear door handles are very small and sit on the B pillar. They are somewhat practical depending on where you are, but for the most part, they’re a bit of a pain.

At the back, is where things are pretty clean. You get 4 taillights which seems to be Ferrari’s new trademark style recently as well as four exhausts a diffuser and a rear spoiler. You also get cut-out points at the back which help with aerodynamics. It’s all very sculpted and clean.

Inside, the interior is quite wild. There is no center infotainment display. Instead, the passenger gets a touchscreen and the driver gets a digital gauge cluster and digital steering wheel. It’s definitely a very unique design that will get people talking. However, it isn’t as practical as the interior seen on the DBX 707, Urus, Bentayga, etc. The seats are very cool and sporty yet offer a lot of support. There are also only four of them and having five seats is impossible since Ferrari does not offer that.

The Tech Is Impressive

The Purosangue may not be a great off-roader, but on the road, it sure is a monster. The Purosangue has an updated version of the very complex AWD system used in the GTC4 Lusso. The cPurosangue now sends its power to the front wheels via an electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD). This means the grip is strong and that it can also drive on ice at slow speeds. Furthermore, the Purosangue includes the very impressive rear-wheel steering system used in the 812 Superfast as well as torque vectoring.

This makes the car so much more agile, especially in the tight bends. The Purosangue does not drive like a normal SUV then. Instead, it drives like and feels like a proper Ferrari.

To Conclude

Ferrari Purosangue SUV Finally Revealed

The new Ferrari Purosangue is a very impressive car. It drives and feels like a supercar yet you can still have a family of four riding comfortably in it to various continental destinations. That being said, it has its issues.

Ferrari has priced this car at ridiculous levels. The reason being is that they don’t need to make this car at all. Ferrari has an order list that makes every other car manufacturer jealous with envy. Furthermore, most cars on that list are piled with ludicrously expensive optional extras.

The reason why Ferrari made this car is that there is a demand for it. A strong demand. Therefore, in order to capitalize on that why not charge the absolute maximum possible? People will pay half a million dollars for this car with no issues whatsoever. In fact, there are many people who will even go out there and buy two of them. Also, Ferrari has a very select process in who gets a new Ferrari or not. They control supply and increase demand by making these cars exclusive.

As a car though, the Urus is clear. Not only is it cheaper, but it’s more practical and it looks better. That car is in very high demand and it is currently Lamborghini’s best selling car.
