We all can agree on the fact that all Rolls Royce cars are very expensive. The cheapest one, being the Ghost at $320,000. That’s more than a McLaren 720S. The thing is, Rolls Royce is all about luxury, therefore these prices are somewhat justified. However, when do things become a little too over the top? Well, meet the Rolls Royce Boat Tail. A yacht on wheels? Well, at $28 million, it’s certainly priced at yacht money.
In fact, some private jets cost less than this car. That’s absolutely mental, and it must mean the Boat Tail is a pretty impressive car. It has been inspired by large J-Class yachts and the whole design project took four years. It truly is a work of art and only three production models will be built. These cars feature a variety of features. Things like a “hosting-suite” at the rear. One side has utensils, glasses, and a double fridge for Champagne. The other side has an area for fine snacks such as Caviar maybe. It also has a removable canopy roof and a timepiece from Swiss watchmakers Bovet. These pieces can either be worn by the owner or mounted within the dashboard of the car.
Rolls Royce has really taken a different approach to luxury in comparison to German marques such as Mercedes. There isn’t any space-age technology or some crazy electric power terrain with space thrusters. Under the hood is a 563hp twin-turbo 6.75 liter V12 from the Rolls Royce Phantom. In fact, the whole car is based upon the Phantom which is good news since the Phantom platform has been proven to be the most luxurious car platform in the world. However, some may argue that this is just an expensive Phantom and that it’s a complete rip-off.
Now, it may be near as makes no difference $27.5 million more than a Phantom. You could actually buy 56 Rolls Royce Phantom’s for the price of one Boat Tail. So why on earth would you buy the Boat Tail? Why would anyone want to spend $28 million on a car based on something mainly used for weddings?

More Than a Car
The Boat Tail is more than a car. In fact, it’s a work of art. Step inside and you find yourself in a whole new world. Everything feels nice. Beyond nice. It’s fabulous. The one word that is repeated over and over again when describing a car like this is “craftsmanship.” This car is full of exquisite craftsmanship, and you can tell that the people who built this car are not only skillful at what they do but passionate too.
Everything feels well put together. No corners have been cut and you get a sense with this car that they truly went above and beyond to fulfill the requests from the three customers who have ordered these cars. Take a look at the tachometer and speedometer of the car. They’re so detailed and you can just tell they were made by hand. This is the same situation with the timepiece in the middle of the dashboard.
The whole interior is full of luscious leather that has all been stitched or piped by hand. It makes a normal Phantom interior look like one out of a Dodge Intrepid. Then you have the rear deck at the back. It’s finished in the same wood you would find on a luxurious J-Yacht and it’s very beautiful. Crafted from the finest woods available, it feels and looks very expensive indeed. This helps the car get that yacht-style looks and they open in a gullwing style way with one wooden door opening oppositely to the other. It really is then a yacht for the road.
Only 3 Will Be Made
Unlike the Phantom, the Cullinan, or the Ghost, the Boat Tail will not be produced in great numbers. In fact, less than five will be made, making it one of the rarest man-made creations ever. These 3 cars will all be built to the specifications of the intended client. It’s a fully coach-built car which means it’s based on an existing car but the body and interior have been changed. Most of the mechanics are the same as the Phantom.
It has taken four years to create and develop these three cars. That’s just over 35,000 hours which is incredible. They really have taken their time building this car, and the details really do show that. The whole project was kept under top-secret then for the past four years since the news of this new car was revealed about a week ago. Rolls Royce is better at keeping secrets than most intelligence firms. Who knows what else they have planned for the future?
It looks like a very hard build too. You can tell that most parts were specifically made for this car only, so most stuff is all a one-off. The whole body is of course a one-off, the lights, most of the interior trim, etc. This car is a cabriolet, and it’s also as mentioned earlier based upon the new Phantom 8. There is no Phantom 8 cabriolet at all, so the whole platform had to be redesigned to accommodate the detachable roof.
It’s a very unique car, and it just shows us what Rolls Royce is capable of doing. It also shows that if you have the money, then anything is possible with Rolls Royce.
Would We Buy One?
Well, in reality, we really cant do it. Rolls Royce just won’t sell one to us. The three cars have already been sold, and they have been since the project started. However, if we had the opportunity to would we?
Well, it certainly is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. You won’t really ever experience the same sort of customer service anywhere else. These three customers who are purchasing the Boat Tail have probably had a fantastic four years. Rolls Royce has treated them like absolute royals for the past four years.
The car in itself is spectacular. No words can describe the craftsmanship and the number of hours that have gone into making this beast. It’s a car that if you have the money you should buy because there is nothing like it. It may not be the fastest but it sure is the most luxurious car in the world, and it’s just so beautiful.
To put it short, if we had the money and the opportunity to then yes we would buy a Boat Tail.
