The global technology convention, CES recently closed its doors for 2022, and what a year it’s been for new technology. From innovations in the Metaverse to crazy new TVs. However, whilst all of these consumer goods and virtual innovations are cool, they’re not what we’re 100% interested in. What we’re interested in, is the cars at CES 2022. There’s a lot of them.
No prizes for guessing that most of these cars were EV’s. However, this year the motor industry really took center stage at the show with glimpses into future automotive technology. Most of these cars were concepts, however, some are actual production vehicles that you can buy right now.
Many of these concepts are set to become production cars in the next few years. This means that the motoring industry is set to become a whole lot more exciting with all of these whacky new EVs. Some of which claim ludicrous amounts of range. There were also quite a few new startup EV brands at CES too. All of them hope to have the same success as Tesla.
Last year at CES, we saw many new productions in cars including the BMW iX, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and the Audi RS E-Tron GT. Therefore, some of the cars at this year’s CES could be available for customer order by the end of this year. Here are some of the hottest cars from this year’s CES.
The New Mercedes EQXX
The Mercedes EQXX is one of the coolest-looking cars I’ve ever seen. It looks like a spaceship and in some ways, it is a tad old-school. The rear of the car looks as if it has been inspired by some of the designs from the 1950s. The front of the car is very different from any other Mercedes in recent times since it does not feature a grille. Rather it has a huge three-pointed star stuck on the hood. It does give some vibes to the Mercedes C111 supercar concept from the 1970s.
The shape though is not there to look cool. It’s there to be practical. This is quite possibly the most aerodynamic car in the world. Its shape means that this car can do a range of 621 miles on a single charge. This car is 40% more efficient than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range plus.
It has solar panels on the roof too, which can be used for powering some of the interior features. It’s perfect then if you live in a very sunny area like Arizona or Dubai.
Inside it’s like no other Mercedes. It features a “hyper screen” which stretches across the whole dashboard. It’s very minimalist with no buttons or knobs in sight (except for steering wheel buttons and the hazard button). The trim also has this silver pinhole-like effect. It looks very luxurious indeed.
It’s a 2+2 which means 2 seats in the front and 2 useless seats in the back. The center console though stretches from the front of the interior all the way to the rear. The seats in themselves are very weird. It’s a bucket seat that has different sections to it. They’re not as luxurious looking as the seats in the EQS but they still are very cool. You also get straps as door handles. The whole interior is also 100 percent vegan. No leather whatsoever.
Chevrolet Silverado EV
The Chevrolet Silverado EV is GM’s answer to the Ford F150 Lightning, Rivian T1, and the Tesla Cybertruck. There is the GMC Hummer EV however, that’s more of a “Lifestyle” truck. The Silverado is far more for the practical man.
It is a good-looking truck. The whole exterior design has been changed so it is far more aerodynamic. The Ford F150 Lightning on the other hand essentially looks like a normal F150. It does give me slight Hyundai Santa Cruz vibes as the two do look somewhat similar from some angles. It’s been developed as an electric pickup truck from the ground up.
This truck will have up to 400 miles of range and a crazy 664hp. That’s almost as much as a Ferrari 488 supercar. It hits 60 in 4.5 seconds too which is absolutely wild for a truck of this size. This means that this truck can tow up to 10,000 pounds which sure is quite a bit. A future LT model though will be able to tow 20,000 pounds.
The bed is very clever too. There is a hatch that opens into the cabin which means you can carry goods that are over 10ft long. It’s all very clever. Plus there’s a trunk in the front too which makes this truck so much more sensible and practical. The interior is beautiful and everything looks high-quality and the trim is all very fancy indeed.
It will be hitting the markets very soon.
BMW iX Flow
The BMW iX already is on sale today, but the iX flow isn’t. Now the iX Flow looks like a normal iX inside and out but that’s where the similarities between the iX Flow and the iX stop. The exterior color of the iX flow is this strange chrome-like patterned finish. It looks like a very expensive vinyl wrap, but it isn’t. However, it’s far from that though but at the same time, they’re somewhat similar.
The paint in the iX Flow can change in the blink of an eye. Hang on a minute, what does that mean? Now, to explain this we have to take the example of an Amazon Kindle. If you own one you will be aware of something called e-Ink. This is essentially electronic ink which the Kindle uses to make eBooks look more real. However, this is the first time ever that a car manufacturer has ever applied it to the whole of a car. It is then pretty wild.
This could be the future of paint for car manufacturers. In the long run, it could be cheaper and better for the environment. However, at first, this technology will be very expensive. The BMW iX M60 was also launched this year at CES 2022, and that car will be on the markets very very soon.
To Conclude:
This years CES has been a blast for cars. There were so many cars at the show which showed off tomorrow’s technology. Sony had two cars and they’re even planning on entering the motor industry themselves in the next few years.
These new cars at CES will turn people who were not interested in cars, into car enthusiasts. The technology is mind-blowing and you just think to yourself, what sort of cars will be at CES in say 2025? They’ll probably be able to hover at this rate. But in all seriousness, an electric car that can do 1000 lm on a single charge is a huge achievement, and Mercedes have promised to put that car into production. Furthermore, a car that can change its paint in the drop of a hat? Now that sure is space age technology.
