This may be a very outlandish statement, but I think the Porsche Taycan is the best car Porsche has made this century. Being the 21st century. Of course, there have been some great Porsches during this century including the Carrera GT, the 911 GT2 RS, the 911 GT3 RS, the Cayman, etc. However, none of them have been as important as the Taycan.
The Taycan is the stepping stone into not only Porsche’s first-ever electric car, but it’s also one of the first proper luxury electric cars from the VW-Audi group. It will be a base for many cars in the future from not only Porsche but also from luxury brands such as Audi, Bentley, and even Lamborghini. The Taycan is such an important car in the motoring world hence why it deserves to be taken seriously.
Most people know that Internal Combustion Engined (ICE) car is on its way out. They only really have a few years left with most states and countries banning the sales of new ICE cars from around 2030. Therefore, every company regardless of who they are has to take action in order to survive in the future. We all know Tesla has had a monopoly over the years within the EV world and no manufacturer has ever been able to get on the same level as Tesla with their cars. All except Porsche who has made a proper electric car to rival Tesla and they have succeeded in making the world’s greatest electric car.
The Taycan is properly good. It has had many years of development and it was launched finally in 2019. The Taycan featured everything a car enthusiast wants. It handles well, it accelerates well, it has a lot of space and it looks great. It’s an electric car that feels like a Porsche.
When Porsche made an electric car, people were worried. What would it be like? Would this be the end of the Porsche we know and love today? Would Porsche suddenly turn into an eco-friendly car manufacturer that hates speed and car enthusiasts? Well, no. In fact, what they did with their electric car was make it in the same way they make all of their other cars. Brilliantly. They put driving pleasure first with this car and it is the perfect electric car for car enthusiasts.
The Taycan not only is brilliant to drive but it’s also very luxurious. It features very exotic materials such as leather, vegan materials, and a new thing called “race-tec” which is essentially Alcantara. The interior is beautiful. Not as crazy as a Tesla with the big screen and minimalist design but the Porsche does things differently. It features more luxury details, a more of a cockpit driver-focused feel, and a premium design. Everything about the Taycan is beautiful inside and out. It features so much technology too from the batteries to the interior screens.
Why The Taycan Is So Good
The Taycan is an absolutely insane car. It starts at $103,800 which is a lot of money but for that, you do get a lot of car for the money. The base model is the Taycan 4S and that has 523hp as standard but upgrade to the Performance Battery Plus model and you get 563hp. Those are supercar figures from a four-door sedan. Therefore you get a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds and a flat out speed of 155 mph. That is incredibly fast then and the Performance Battery Plus model has more power than the current base-spec Model S, the Long Range Plus. It has five more horsepower but it’s 0.1 slower to 60 than the base Model S and the Model S starts at $79,990 which is far cheaper.
The top model is special though, and it’s what everyone talks about. The Taycan Turbo S may have a very weird name since a “turbo” is what an ICE car uses. However, Porsche changed the meaning of the word “turbo” which they say nowadays just means fast. The Taycan Turbo S sure is fast with 751hp and 774 lb-ft of torque. That may not be as much as the top Tesla Model S Performance but the Taycan Turbo S does a 0-60 in around 2.4 seconds which is the same as the Tesla. It beats it in most races and it kills the Tesla around the corners.
The Taycan is the fastest accelerating Porsche production car ever. It’s faster than the 911 GT2 RS and the 918. Yet it seats four to five depending on the spec and it has a decent-sized trunk. Two in fact. It has big comfy seats and you can drive it miles upon miles until it runs out of juice at around 256 miles. That’s a lot less than the Model S but the Taycan Turbo S has two chargers on each side of the car.
It’s a game-changer. It has a brilliant chassis with a very low centre of gravity hence it grips to the road like a sports car. It feels sporty, looks sporty and it even has a noise function whereby the Taycan can make sporty sounds inside the cabin to keep you awake. This is the best handling electric car on the market right now. It really is impressive and its build quality is sublime, unlike the Teslas.
Porsche’s first attempt at an electric car gives much hope. It shows that you won’t need to spend millions if you want fun with an electric car. Course it’s expensive but it’s so worth it. They could have made the Taycan be like some super expensive supercar that was completely impractical, but they didn’t. In fact, they have made more than just a car. It’s a base for future models to come, and that’s exciting. We cannot wait for the future and because the future for Porsche is bright if they’re going to base all of their EV cars on the Taycan platform, which they are. The future EV Macan and Cayman/Boxster will both be electric and on the Taycan platform. Plus batteries will get batter and charging will be easier. Even the range will increase and most of all, so will the top speed.
