This year you need to go on a road trip. However, not just any old road trip. A sports car road trip. This year we know has just started and it’s following quite possibly the most eventful year of the 21st century. As we know 2021 will have its hiccups. We still at this time in January have a raging virus going around and it doesn’t look like it will go away anytime soon. Of course, there is a vaccine but there are a lot of people to vaccinate. However, 2021 won’t always be lockdowns and pandemics. There will be times, most likely the summer, where you are allowed to do pretty much anything you want.
Last year many people did driving tours as an alternative to going abroad. The reason why is that they were cautious about the virus of course and it was also a lot cheaper. There are plenty of good roads to a road trip on. If you are in the states you have Route 66 and if you’re in the UK you have the NC500.
If you are a car enthusiast you would one hundred percent want to do one of these road-trips. However, the thing is that these road trips are best done in something a bit sporty. Doing one of these road-trips say in a minivan or an SUV just isn’t as exciting as you would want it to be. Of course, if it’s a family adventure a sports car is a bit impractical but if you really want to appreciate these roads then you need the right car for the job.
If you want a once in a lifetime memorable experience then you need to try this. Find your favorite road (most preferably in your home country), then purchase your favorite sports car (maybe an MX-5 or a 911) and finally get some like-minded mates together and take the tour. This is a car enthusiast’s dream to do and in all honesty, it doesn’t need to be stupidly expensive. It’s a great trip to do and if you get it right it can be a bundle of laughs for all.
So pack your bags and get ready for the best holiday you will ever go on. Beautiful roads, great company and even better cars!
How Do I Plan For Such a Trip?
This is the fun part. The planning stage will take a long time maybe but it’s worth it. First, you need to have a location in mind. It can be international (obviously watch for Covid restrictions or any other restrictions, etc) or it can be domestic. Some of the best roads in the world are mainly hidden in mountains. Snakey, windy roads that really will push your sports car and your driving skills to the max.
Get a group of mates together. It’s quite easy to do so. You can find people with similar interests in Facebook groups or local car clubs.
Then it’s time for the car. The fun part. This all depends on your budget as if you have a high budget you can purchase something newer or rarer like a 992 911 or if your budget is super low you can purchase a used MX-5. Renting a car is an option too since all the big companies like Hertz offer sports cars as rentals but of course, it’s just not as personal since the rental car isn’t yours to keep at the end. However, it can work out cheaper and you could bag yourself a better car for a lower price. But things like the higher-end supercars and sports cars are very expensive but obviously a lot less than the actual cars.
The key car we would recommend for this journey is no other than the manual Porsche 996 Carrera 4S. It’s a brilliant sports car with four seats and an amazing 3.6 liter flat-6 known as the Mezger engine. It’s very comfortable, well-built and it handles very well. It sounds amazing and it’s a joy to drive. Another option is the Mazda MX-5, a cheap simple sports car that loves to take corners. It’s a 2-seater drop-top with a decent-sized trunk and great reliability.
What Is There To Do On a Sports Car Roadtrip?
The main thing to do on a sports car road trip is drive. Appreciate the roads and challenge yourself in the bends. You don’t need to drive super fast if you don’t want to. Sometimes cruising with the top down is just perfection. You can stop off at local areas of attraction within your tour for example a beach. You can park up and go walking in mountains or you can photography/vlog the whole journey. You can even stop off at local car events if you find any.
You can also try out new cultures and foods if your in a new country, state, etc. It’s always good to try out new things and you never know you may like whatever you try.
Another thing you can do on your sports car road trip is track-racing. There are plenty of race tracks around in which you can drive as fast as you want as we all know on the road there are speed limits and cops. It’s best to plan out day by day what you are going to do as this means you waste less time and you know where you’re going and when you’re going.
The best sports car road trips are the ones with many other cars. Think Gumball 3000 which is a huge well-known international rally that happens each year between select locations. Of course, though that costs $50,000 or so to enter you can do your own Gumball 3000 style road trip just without the parties and extravagance. There are though plenty of other car rally companies who offer something similar for less money.
You can even do off-roading as long as your car can do it and it’s on public land. Imagine drifting your car in the snow! It’s all a load of fun bit of course be careful on these driving holidays. Make sure you don’t drive beyond your limits and always stick to local laws. Speed kills and you don’t want to die because of stupidity.
